I am going to start a series of posts dedicated to my wanderlust. It’s a huge part of me so I feel it deserves a place on this blog.
Back in 2009 I backpacked for 6 months through North America, South America, Parts of Europe and South West Africa. I had a travel blog at the time.
Each night I would snuggle up with my iphone 3 in my hostel bunk and write a post about my day. Yes I got really fast at using the iphone keypad. Using a WordPress App, I would publish my posts as soon as Wifi connection was available.
I wrote with my heart, not only what I had experienced, but how I felt.
The purpose of the blog was purely for myself, but I knew people back home were reading. My mum said it felt like she was right there with me, which was nice. The blog had almost become a friend to me. When you’re travelling solo, yes you are surrounded by people, but you can still feel incredibly alone. The blog was safe for me.
When I got home, I did something completely stupid, I moved all my website hosting. I took a backup of my blog but I didn’t check it. A couple months after I had canceled the hosting account I went to restore my travel blog on a new host. I opened up the database files and it was corrupt. I had lost my entire blog.
To say I was devastated was an understatement. Yes I still have my photos, I still have the memories, but this blog had become such a huge extension of who I was.
Whilst I never think I will get the opportunity to backpack around the world for 6 months again, I will try to resurrect some of the posts. It will be nothing like last time as I think it would be near impossible to capture the raw emotions of a solo traveller so long after the event.
This time it won’t be about me, it will be for you.
I hope these posts inspire you to visit beautiful, uncomfortable and different places.
