Favourite things to grow in winter

Here in the subtropics, our cool season growing is super short. We only have a short window to grow some of the things that other climate zones can grow right into spring.

On the other hand, if we're in an area that doesn't get frost, it's also a great time for us to grow things that are normally grown in Spring. We can also get a headstart on most other climates.

Here are some of my favourite things to grow in winter in the subtropics.

Snow Peas

My favourite at the moment is the Giant Yakumo. It has stunning purple flowers and the biggest snow peas you've ever seen.

Broccoli

This Autumn I planted 20 broccoli plants, and I am still planting them! Whilst it's now too late for my beloved cauli, the broccoli succession is still in full swing. Broccoli is a staple in our household so it's been great to have them on hand, and I'll keep going with them until it gets too hot.

Sugar snap Peas

My fave in the garden. We grow the cascadia sugar snap as it's resistant to the mildew which is often an issue in our humid climate.

Kohlrabi

Where has this been all my life?! This has to be my new favourite veggie. So versatile, so quick and easy to grow too.

Carrots

When space was limited I always avoided growing carrots as I had this idea in my head that they took forever to grow. After doing some research I've found a whole bunch of carrots that are quick to mature and really they don't take up much space at all. Some varieties I am loving are Baby Amsterdam and Red Kuroda.
